Form & Flow

Updated: Dec 5, 2024

A Dance Piece Inspired by the Theme of Migration and the Simplicity of the Meaning of Human Connection.

Form & Flow is an innovative dance piece inspired by the theme of migration. For some, migrating is a choice; for others, it is the only available option. This work delves into that point of convergence, telling stories that reflect the diversity of cultures, identities, and human experiences, all connected by a single thread: the need to adapt and survive. Amid the challenges of facing the unknown, bonds are formed, because while our cultures may change, our essence remains the same.

Being a migrant is not just a label; it is a condition that drives individuals to find a place where they can express their cultural identity. This process is accompanied by social challenges, such as intolerance, among others. Through this piece, the choreographer seeks to give voice to these feelings through body movements that invite us to feel the journey every migrant goes through.

In a global context where respect and values seem to be fading, while hatred and war are normalised, Form & Flow emerges as a call to attention to the beauty that arises when human beings connect, transcending physical and emotional barriers.

This captivating performance blends two seemingly opposing dance styles: popping and contemporary dance. Popping, with its sharp precision, contrasts with the fluid and expansive movements of contemporary dance, creating a dynamic interaction that symbolizes the meeting and integration of cultures in an ever-changing world. Through this choreographic duality, the piece demonstrates how differences can converge in harmony, giving rise to a unique language of movement that transcends any border.

A central element of the piece is a movable wooden structure, which serves as a metaphor for the social and cultural barriers present in the contemporary world. The performers’ interaction with this structure not only intensifies the visual and emotional impact of the piece but also reflects the tensions and unions that arise when facing the experience of displacement.

Form & Flow is not just a dance piece; it is an invitation to reflect on our shared humanity, fostering empathy and understanding through the beauty of movement. The dancers, from diverse backgrounds, represent how human connection can overcome any barrier, whether physical or symbolic, creating a profound and moving experience for the audience.

This work by Plonova Dance promises to be one of the most exciting and thought-provoking experiences at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness a vibrant, inclusive, and meaningful dance piece that invites everyone to question the boundaries of identity and cultural diversity.
